With the advent of fast, inexpensive home computers, large hard drives, and technologies such as FireWire (IEEE1394), Digital8 and miniDV camcorders, it is now easier than ever to be able to edit your movies at home, and at prices that were unthinkable just a couple of years ago. Woodland Film Transfer can assist you in beginning your editing with the transfer of your film to miniDV tape. Below we have compiled some suggestions and assembled a group of links we have found useful in helping clients get started in editing at home.

Apple's iMovie

Depending on what type of computer you have (Apple Macintosh or PC) the major differences are in software. Most editing software operates in basically the same way. We won't attempt to get into detail here, as whatever software you buy will come with some type of manual detailing the fine points of operation.

One note on film to DVD. We get asked the question occasionally as to whether or not you can edit the files on a DVD we produce. The answer is: not easily. If you are looking to edit your home movies, your best bet is to go to a digital tape format such as miniDV or Digital8. The MPEG2 files on a DVD (not just ones that we produce) are not editable in the conventional sense, that is they are not able to be imported directly into a video editing program. (There are utilities out there that can edit an MPEG2 file, but they are not intended for editing, more for the trimming of files)
